This product is a result of the ME to WE project, an initiative by A Hundred Hands, an NGO that encourages craftspeople across crafts, media and geographies to collaborate on design and innovation. The popular snakes and ladders game is thus a fusion of two crafts, the lightweight, wooden pawns handcrafted by our artisans from channapatna and the beautiful mats, custom-embroidered by Porgai, a producer group of Lambadi women from Sitlingi, Tamil Nadu. This games comes with a lovely custom-made handblock-printed potli (a cloth bag), the embrodiered mat, 4 pawns and a dice.
The curvy path of black and white steps is the road taken by the lambadi women of Sitlingi as they do the daily trek via the maize fields and home in their bus to their training centre down the hill. The ladders are represented by the palm trees. This games utlises some of the most intricate stitches from the traditional vocabulary of the lambadi women.
